Mr. Carmen took his 7th Period art class outside to practice drawing realistic landscapes. They used their hands to show the field of view that their drawing would show. Then they used a compare and contrast technique to get the proportions right. Then when they finished they compared it one last time to ensure it was correct, then they knew they were done.

The students who earned the 24 club of March, also earned a trip to Hansen's Dairy Farm. They learned how to make homemade ice cream, and butter from the milk and cream of the cows at the farm. Then they got to enjoy the butter and ice cream they made. The 24 Club students said that the butter and ice cream was very good!

Mrs. Andrew's Class Learns About Cleaning Oil Spills!

We read the story Saving the Sound, which discussed the Exxon Valdez oil spill and its effects on the environment. At the time, the spill was considered the worst spill ever. People were not prepared for the oil spill and didn't react fast enough. The sound was destroyed along with all the plant and animal life. The students did an experiment on how to try to clean up an oil spill. They were each given a container of water, a piece of yarn (containment boom), straws, a little dish soap and spoons. Mrs. Andrew dumped a cap full of oil in their environment and they had to use their equipment to get it out. The students used strategies they learned from the story, like trying to trap the oil with the string (containment boom) right away. When they added dish soap, they used the straw to make waves so it would mix in. The students learned how hard it is to clean up an oil spill.

Solid almond bark with heat added turns into a liquid. Mrs. Chaney's 6^th grade science classes dipped pretzels into the liquid chocolate and allowed it to cool. As the chocolate cooled, it turned back into a solid state.

Racing in the gym after eating all the delicious cookies!!!

The 6th grade students read the story Hot Dogs and Bamboo Shoots by Yoshiko Uchida in Reading class. The story was about a Japanese girl who grew up in America. The story described how her Japanese family celebrated New Years. They had a big feast that included lobster, herring roe, knotted seaweed, terakyii chicken, bamboo shoots, sweet black beans, etc. Mrs. Andrew brought in some Japanese food for the students to eat. They were able to try teriyaki chicken, fried rice, Japanese style noodles, bamboo shoots, hot peas, and fortune cookies. The Japanese hot peas were very hot, so hot some of the students had to spit them out after trying them.

Mrs. Chaney's Science Class

Fifth and sixth graders did an experiment about density and physical change with Mrs. Chaney. They made Italian dressing with, water, vinegar, and oil. They watched each substance either sink or float based on its density.

For the chemical change, the experiment consisted of pudding powder and milk, which changed into a new substance. They were able to indulge in the experiments by eating the Italian dressing on a salad and the pudding for dessert!

On October 29, the middle school went Trick-Or-Treating in the middle and high schools and to other places on campus. They had some pretty good costumes. They were happy to eat the candy they had received. The students were appreciative to everyone who participated in giving them candy on campus. • 1st Picture--Guest Speaker: Financial literacy and Employability Skills had the opportunity to listen to Mike Frishmeyer, an investor from Fort Dodge discuss how to invest money and the different tools available for use when investing money.

•1st Picture: Employability Skills visited Wells Fargo Bank in Fort Dodge to learn about banking. After a tour of the bank, the students were able to learn about the various banking options available to start saving their money.

BEACON OF HOPE!!!

YouthBuild students have taken on the challenge of helping Beacon of Hope Men’s Shelter in Fort Dodge. They are preparing for it’s opening which is expected to take place this December. YouthBuild students have been working to organize the items inside, clean out various rooms, wash down walls, and whitewash basement walls. YouthBuild students have spent two full days as well as several afternoons doing whatever is asked of them. Beacon of Hope Men’s shelter will be a shelter for homeless men to come for a meal, warm night, shower, and a change of clothes.

24 Club Field Trip

The 24 club took a field trip to Carroll’s Pumpkin Farm in Grinnell, Iowa. They got to pick out their own pumpkins and they also got to jump on a giant orange pillow. The kids got to feeds goats and play their “playground” which had corn instead of sand on the floor. They also learned about the growth of pumpkins and ate lunch in an old barn. Everyone had a great time! Check it out next year!

Mr. Simon’s class was working hard learning new music. Each student was only able to hear themselves play because they had their head phones plugged into the back of their piano. Mrs. Armitage recorded 4 different songs on the camera. It was fun to listen to the class play music. Noah was the most experienced player and was playing a difficult piece of music. We can’t wait to hear them perform!!!

Wind Chimes

Ms. Andrew’s Art class made wind chimes. They are made of 2 liter bottles covered with colored tissue paper. Hanging from the 2 liter bottle is shapes cut from more plastic bottles that were colored with glue and food coloring. The students then added bells for sound. The wind chimes sound and look wonderful. Way to be creative!!!

Spanish Masks

Ms. Rachel’s first period and eighth period Spanish classes made bright and colorful masks for El Dia de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) for part of their cultural Fridays. The kids used torn up newspaper that they paper mached to a blown up balloon. When they got done paper maching, they popped the balloon with a thumbtack. Then they cut them in half and sanded and painted them a color of their choice. Both classes did an excellent job and the masks were made beautifully. Great Job!!!

Making pillows!!

Mrs. Andrews’s Art class made pillows to give as Christmas gifts to the students’ mothers and grandmothers. They made these pillows from scratch fabric and hand sewed the sixteen individual squares of fabric together. Then using a sewing machine, the students sewed the trimming on the side of the pillow. At the end of all the sewing, came the fun part….the stuffing!! The students had a lot of fun making the pillows and learning how to sew. Thanks to all of those who donated materials to complete this project.

Safety Certified

Mrs. Winge’s Vocational Program completed safety training in class. The purpose of this training was to prepare the students for industrial hazards that could happen in a work environment. The class had to complete a certain amount of hours to be certified. The safety training covered construction hazards, kitchen hazards, health hazards and safety hazards. Everyone had a fun time doing the training and gained a lot of useful information!

Blog Class

Our blog class works on taking photos of projects that happen during school. We then edit photos before putting them on the Rabiner blog site. There are 3 students in this class. We've been working with Picnik, a photo editing site, to get all of our pictures into tip top shape for the blog. We will soon be working with GIMP, a program similiar to Photo Shop, so we can get more photo editing options. Ms. Armitage, our teacher, is the person who looks over our work. When it is done, Ms. Armitage also teaches us how to use and edit the photos on the blog site. David, Colby and Jared would like to thank Ms. Armitage for making this class as fun as it is!!

Aquarium Diorama

Ms.Andrew’s art class made a creative project called an Aquarium Diorama which consisted of using laptop cardboard boxes. All the students in the class said they really enjoyed making the project. They had very colorful fish and reefs that were 3D. Great job middle school art class!

Pumpkin Time!!!!

Mr. Carmen and some students from Rabiner planted pumpkins in pots the first part of May. They transplanted them outside in the middle part of May. Overall, they grew 49 pumpkins!! They plan on making into Jack-O-Lanterns. Students will get to choose the pumpkin of their choice based on their average school point total. Good job to Mr. Carmen and the kids that helped him.

Rocket Bakery!

Foods class and Introduction to Business students started the Rocket Bakery this trimester. Students from Foods have been studying the need for kitchen safety and sanitation. Introduction to Business students have been completing cost analysis of the bakery products by utilizing spreadsheets to keep all totals of the sales of the products and purchases needed to keep the bakery business profitable. It was determined that to begin the Rocket Bakery all potential customers would have to have a sample of the product. The first product from the bakery was determined to be white bread. After the samples were given out to potential customers, the sales orders were taken and production began. Thursday mornings both classes combine to set the yeast, and mix up the dough for the bread. During the day the dough is kneaded twice and then baked, bagged and is ready for distribution on Friday's. The cost of the supplies has been offset by the sale of the bread. The first week there were more orders for bread than could be made so the students discussed how they were to handle the problem. It was determined that every person would get a loaf of bread to get the product out, and then the next week work to fulfill all orders.

Fish Hatchery

Fishing at Spirit Lake in May

On the last 24 club outing for the year, students at Rabiner took a field trip to Sprit Lake, Iowa to visit the fish hatchery and go fishing afterward.

The students had an amazing time. They enjoyed talking to the DNR officers. They taught the students how our lakes are kept clean. They then talked about how all the fish that go into the lake are handled before they are introduced back into their natural habitat. The staff and students at RTC would like to thank the Iowa DNR for letting us tour the fish hatchery!

After the hatchery, the students went fishing with Mr. Ron and Ms. Amanda. The students caught lots of Blue Gills and Large Mouth Bass. It was a successful day of fishing and there were many stories of the big fish that got away!!!

GRADUATION SPEAKER JEFF HANSON

Jeff Hanson came to the RTC high school graduation in May 2010. Jeff Hanson grew up without hands and one leg. The doctors were baffled when Hanson was born and had no explanation why he was born this way. Jeff Hanson found his talent in drawing at the age of five when his dad brought home a bag with a dancing snoopy on it, and he drew it close to perfection! His parents saw his talents and encouraged him to pursue it. Jeff Hanson works for Heartland Communications in Fort Dodge. His speech gave a lot of inspiration to the Rabiner students and graduates. Jeff Hanson stated that he wants to help the next generation of kids. He says, "I want them to know there is a God who loves them and cares about them and that it doesn’t matter what trials they have in their life, they can use their trials or handicaps to help others and be a blessing.” We all had a wonderful time listening to Jeff Hanson and on behalf of all of the whole Rabiner staff and students we’d like to thank him very much for visiting us.

Last May, two students, Josh and Kee, graduated from Rabiner Treatment Center and Manson Nothwest Webster school. Their families were in the audience to offer support and care. Josh got up to speak about how far he has come since he first got here and how he was going to make his future as bright as possible. Mr. Klug, CEO of Rabiner, and Mr. O’Brien, school principal, were there to speak about how far Josh and Kee have come since they first started and to wish them the best. Mr. Hanson was the guest speaker and he spoke about how he had to overcome many obstacles in life. In addition, he spoke on how people didn’t think he would be able to accomplish all that he has.

After the ceremony there were cookies and cake for everyone. Teachers, students, and staff congratulated them as well. Congrats to both Josh and Kee from Rabiner Treatment Center.

Murray McMurray Hatchery from Webster City presented to the middle school and high school students on May 10th. Curt McCoskey along with his son, Logan, explained to the students the process of the hatchery, the process of the chickens hatching from the eggs, and the care that is required for the baby chickens before they are shipped out. Curt brought many different types of baby chickens for the students to see. Attached are pictures of his visit! Thank you SO much for sharing with us!!!

Electric Car Project

Mr. Dave's high school students are close to completing their semester long electric car project. Students from several classes have been working on the car. Math students created the initial design and cutting of the metal. The technology literacy and electronics students have done the majority of the assembly. Their goal is to have the car operational for the Carbon Awareness Day that will be held the last week of school! Great job gentlemen! It has been very fun to see the progress made on the car! Thanks to Mr. Dave and Mr. Guddall for all the hard work it has taken to get this project completed!

High School Foods Class

Ms. Adams' Foods class and Life Skills class enjoyed making Ratatouille and vegetable soup! They also made zucchini bread from fresh zucchini. Everyone was surprised that it tasted sooooo good! The class plans on making it again to share with their peers. The classes are trying to make healthy items in class so they have been adding more vegetables to their diets. Ms. Adams' classes have also been doing research about vegans and vegetarians for the Carbon Footprint science fair. They will be sharing more information about this and some of their yummy food at the fair on May 25th!

OSHA and National Safety Training

Students in the vocational program have received OSHA training from ICCC trainer Tom Anderson. This certification process consists of 10 classroom hours of instruction and demonstrations. Along with the OSHA training, the students also received National Safety Training from Mrs. Winge, which consists of 6 classroom hours of instruction. Both of these training are national and are good for a lifetime. Great job gentlemen!!

Vocational Students Deconstruct!

The vocational students began to deconstruct buildings for the city of Fort Dodge as part of a training agreement with the city. The students have been learning how to deconstruct the homes by taking out window casements, removing bathroom fixtures, removal of light fixtures, and the removing of decks and fencing. In working in partnership with Habitat for Humanity, the items were then taken to the Restore store for sale, with profits utilized by Habitat for Humanity.

The Puppies Visited!!

On Friday, April 30th, two dogs from the Humane Society came to visit Rabiner Students! The two students who earned Student of the Month helped with Sophia and BoBo Bear! The students played with the dogs and provided great fun for all of the students who were able to visit the puppies! After returning the puppies to the Humane Society, the students were able to enjoy lunch at McDonalds! Thanks to Mrs. Winge for setting this up! The kids had a BLAST!!

We recently had a visitor on campus! The kids thought it would be pretty cool to be able to keep the pony! However, it's owner came and got him shortly after he arrived at Rabiner. It was fun to have a pony while it lasted!

24 Club Field Trip

The 24 Club award winners had the opportunity to go to Mason City to dig up some fossils. They went to the Fossil and Prairie Center and Park Preserve. They learned about the fossils, the time periods they came from, and worked with an Iowa DNR officer while they searched. They also got to take a tour and learn about the history of the prairie, as well as tour the clay kilns that were used back in the early 1800's. They really enjoyed it!!
